Geography Fun :)

Fun time with the 2nd Graders

November 26, 2013- Today, our geography class went on a 'field trip' with the second graders to the lower school computer lab and manipulated google earth, locating specific countries the kids were interested in. Our task was to pin-point three different cities in a country, and in those cities, find two significant places that our kids found interesting. From there, we were to create a google earth tour venturing those places and play around with google earth going around the country. Each person in our geography class was assigned one second grader, and from then on, it was our job to teach and help our kids use google earth.

As we entered the classroom, we were welcomed by sweet angelic second graders that sung to us the continents song. I was assigned to an awesome second grader, Keah. She was a very intelligent student that even knew a bit more on google earth than I did... just a bit. Her chosen country or place was New Castle, I honestly didn't know where New Castle is exactly in the globe until I worked with Keah. Turns out, she is from New Castle and the places that she was to locate were places she has visited or wants to visit. It was a great privilege given to us, to be able to work with the kids because it was fun, and it was a learning experience. First of all, I learned how to use and manipulate google earth, and how useful it is. I learned how to be more patient with children, patience was needed in order to teach them, because working at a different pace than they did lead to a little impatience; there were times when I dominated the mouse and the keyboard, doing the work for her... hahaha

Keah and I visited the Angel of the North, Nickelodeon Land, a water park, and many other places as as well. She is such a sweetheart, it was a pleasure spending time with her during this geography class. Thank you Mr. Barnes!

China Changes its One Child Policy

China Changes its One Child Policy

In what ways is China's newest population reform an example of another attempt at controlling the demographic make-up of the country?

China is now considering to lessen the harshness of the "One Child Policy", and allow couples to have two children in the future!! A few decades ago, the country was very strict on it's citizens, resulting into a controlled population, as what is was destined to be, but is going 'too far' as the years go on. The Chinese population now is starting to age, "by 2050, more than a quarter of the population will be over 65"(BBC). The population policy has been working to an extent that it is causing problems to the country, that's why China is considering to "relax" the population policy. There is an exception on the other hand, couples that are 'only child' people can have two children and in the countryside, the couple can only have a second child if their first child is a girl. They are trying to mend the gender imbalance as in the years past, couples would only favor boys because of their ability to work (BBC).
